Justice?

Recently, a judge upheld a Fargo man's conviction even though it was made public that at least one of the jurors found him guilty because of his race (six admitted his race was discussed during deliberations). The city of Fargo was outraged, not to mention extremely embarrassed, by the conduct of the jurors.

Alright, i'm joshing you. No one gave a shit. I don't recall ever reading a Forum editorial, or a "letter to the editor" for that matter, even discussing the whole ordeal. (I promised myself a long time ago that I would never write another "letter to the editor" of the Forum of Fargo-Moorhead. The main reason being that, judging from others' letters, only loons do that. This past week, people have been quoting bible verses tit for tat over Will fucking Ferrell's latest movie.)

Maybe Fargo, like the rest of America, is too worried about their pets to concentrate on much else these last few weeks? (It's tragically funny how a few dogs die and reporters throw on their hats and trench coats and pretend to be muckrakers holding the pet food industry's feet to the fire.) Or perhaps people agree with the juror- if he isn't guilty of this, he is guilty of something? I hesitate to accuse most of the people in Fargo of such a mindset. I fear it is simply a case of my original sentiment- people just don't give a shit. Well, I will rephrase that, people just don't give enough of a shit. And believe me, this is as much a self-critique as a critique of others; I don't absolve myself from any guilt.

So what is the answer? What are we to do? The only realistic answer I could come up with is that we do what we can. Unfortunately for the Mevludin Hidanovics of the world, that is rarely good enough.
